[7/8] It is the first of Enoch Train’s White Diamond Line packet ships, which carry most of the 1.5 million Irish immigrants that come through Boston over the next few years, since passage on the Cunard Line is much more expensive. Oscar Handlin later writes, “The vast majority left their ships in East Boston, without the slightest conception of how they would earn a livelihood and with only enough money to keep them fed and sheltered for a week or two.”
